Finally Making Quilts Again

So, I’ve finally started making stuff again. Feels really good. I want to say thank you to those of you who have started following me on Bloglovin. I really don’t deserve it since it’s been 10 months since I’ve last posted! But I do appreciate it and I have a very good reason for my dry spell…..

will

That little guy (our 3rd one) has been keeping me quite busy. But he is starting to sleep a little more (emphasis on the word little) and so I’ve started missing this space. I’ve actually started a new quilt, have plans to finish two other ones and have a nice little tutorial in the works for making half square triangles. I know I also need to get on board with a Facebook page and Pinterest (I do use both a little personally) but I’m going to create pages just for this blog sometime soon. I know I’ve gotten a couple of emails about that!

So, when I’m not wrangling the little one above, I’ve actually had a chance to turn this stack of fabric (it was a Moda layer cake….Bluebird Park, I think?)

Pinwheel Quilt Tutorial (Using 2 Fabrics + Sashing)

If you want to make a pinwheel quilt like the one above, here are the directions. The finished size is 43.5 x 50.5.

This is a 2 part tutorial, and today’s post is for the quilt top. I should have the finished quilt post up in about a week.

~ Just a little aside, I made this for my 5 year old son and he loves it, (trains!) but I don’t think there’s nearly enough contrast in the fabrics. My next one will have more. I said that to tell you that you might like yours more if you have more contrast, but if you just want to use fabric that you have, (like I did) go for it! 🙂 ~

How to Square Up a Quilt Block (Part of The Beginner Sewing Series)

Squaring up quilt blocks was a step that I used to skip altogether. But then I just I drove myself crazy trying to stretch, pull and creatively iron 🙂 my squares to make them work and ended up with some really wonky quilts. (Which is really fine, after all, this is supposed to be a fun hobby!) But, the more I quilt, the more I want my quilts to look really good, so I’ve started squaring up my blocks most of the time.

Here’s how I square up my quilt blocks. As with most things quilty, there are probably 3000 different ways to do this, but this is the way that works for me. And, a little heads up, you’re probably going to want to rely on my pictures more than my writing! (This was much harder to explain than I anticipated.)

Pinwheel Quilt Block Tutorial

My 5 year old has been asking me to make him a blanket for quite awhile and I’ve finally started on it. (If said 5 year old would ever give me more than 5 minutes to myself I could have made him a dozen blankets by now, but that’s a post for another day.)

I decided to make a little pinwheel quilt using some fabric that I bought quite several months ago. It’s probably a little babyish for him now, but he says he likes it, so I’m using it! It’s perfect, too, because it’s a dark and a light fabric, perfect for a pinwheel!

Step 1) Pick out 2 fabrics that compliment each other, one dark and light. (Of course you can use more than 2 colors, but if you’re new to quilting, I think it’s easiest to start this way, but you can do whatever you want.)

How to Make a Nine Patch Quilt Block

If you’re new to quilting and want to make a quilt block without using a pattern, a good one to start with is a nine patch. They’re very simple to make.

Here are some 9 patch quilt block instructions using just 2 fabrics. I chose 2 coordinating fabrics, one light and one darker.

Cut 5 squares of your lighter fabric and 4 squares of your darker fabric. (You can reverse this and cut 4 lighter squares and 5 dark ones, I just used more of my lighter fabric because I have more of it.)

One Way to Back a Quilt: Pieced Quilt Backing

When I first started quilting, I would occasionally see the term, “pieced backing,” and have no idea what it was referring to. I eventually figured it out, and now I make pieced backings for most of my quilts.

I piece my backings mainly because I love the way it looks, but also because it saves me a  little money.

The Christmas Quilt is Finished at Last!

My completed Christmas quilt! And it only took a year and a half!

I started a Christmas quilt last year, and finally got it finished in time for Christmas this year. It was a Christmas quilt kit, the first and only kit I’ve ever purchased.

Blogger’s Block of the Month #1

I’m participating in Canton Village Quilt Works’ Blogger’s Block of the Month. This is my very first BOM and I can’t wait to see how it turns out! Since I’m using scraps from my stash, the fabrics aren’t exactly what I would have chosen if I was buying them new, but I still think it’s going to end up being pretty cute.
